AVALON [2001]

From Ghost In The Shell director, Mamoru Oshii comes this odd little sci-fi flick based out of Poland.
Avalon attempts to dazzle and frighten with yet another virtual reality story that never really steps into anything new or fresh. The picture is washed over in sepia tones, which quite frankly becomes distracting but serves it's purpose to seamlessly blur the lines between reality and the virtual world as the story develops. While some people might call the special FX hokey, I think this film can get away with it, seeing as it's all in a video game world.
Unfortunately Avalon is so keen on mood and setting, it forgets how to develop a character and therefore the story suffers greatly. The acting and dialogue is way too Captain Power-ish to ever really get involved or take anything seriously.
It could have been neat but has way too many overbearing faults to redeem itself.
